Which water bottle cage will survive the bottle smasher?

As mountain bikes get lighter and more reliable, we don't need to carry around as many supplies. Many MTB riders are ditching their backpacks and turning back to good old fashioned water bottles. My problem is that they always fly out on techy sections!
So today we put a few bottle cages to the test to see which one can actually retain a bottle in the worst conditions.
The bottle smasher subjects the cage to force in the worst direction-outward.
Check out my other video about integrated multi tools nikewomenheels.com/v-video-JK6J8BTwTpk.html
Specialized Zee - as far as I know you can only buy it from a Specialized dealer. They're too cool for Amazon :-(
    Strap amzn.to/2HScynj

This cage only works well with a strap
Cannibal amzn.to/2u4VIzE this cage is insanely expensive for what it is. Don't buy it.

The point of the test was to be as brutal as possible, not to simulate ideal conditions. Mountain bike trails are rough.

Hydration packs were the end of water bottles for me. I even recently mounted an air pump on my water bottle mounts on my commuter bike, and it broke off first ride. Hydration packs are the way to go.

for a metal cage (or any cage you can fit this on)you can take an inner tube and stretch it over both sides it will eliminate vibration and you will drop a lot less bottles if any even

The bottle holder is never mounted horizontally but either vertical or at an upward angle beneath the downtube of a mountain bike so the force on the test is not an accurate one at all. I have the first one he tested and never lost a bottle yet but if I had it would only taken a velcro strap to fix it. I certainly wouldn't panic and try every other bottle cage on the market

Sweet test, Seth. How has your set up been doing since this vid? In my experience the bottles get lost on sustained bumpy sections way more often than on huck to dead stop. Do you think any of those cages would fare better than others strapped to something a jackhammer to mimic long sections of baby heads?

I really like your creativity with this test. After watching this video I wonder if it would've been easier to just buy an old rigid frame. Bolt the rear drop outs to an elavateted 2x4 mount and put a front wheel on the fork. Mount the water bottle cages to the appropriate places and try lifting and dropping the front end of the bike from measuered heights. I'm no engineer, but I think your 2x4 bottle smasher of death might put a little two much stress on the cages from an extreme angle. Otherwise, I enjoyed your experiment!

Gavyn Pendleton 5 months ago A lot of those cages would have done far better on the bike simply because the upward slant and many on them would have done entirely better mounted on the inside of the frame. However I do appreciate the attempt at a fair test.

scientific question...... taking your construction of the bottlecage smasher and the shapes of bike frames, shouldn`t you have positioned the vertical part that stops the droping arm higher to simulate the approx. angle of the frame? I havn`t seen a frame with a bottom tubing in a horizontal position yet.....but I love your videos. They are interesting, full of information, usefull information and are really funny. keep it up. regards from germany

I would have created the rig to emulate the proper angle of the down tube. With your test, you are exposing it to a totally different set of variables. The inertia of the water at an angle would likely help to secure many of the bottle holders, but at 180 degrees the water pulls directly against the frame of all the holders. Good test, but could have been more specific to the mounting orientation on a bike.
